Acid Attack Survivors

Acid attack survivors have a difficult time being accepted into society, let alone finding work. Their trauma is made much more difficult by a culture that restricts their development. However in Agra and Lucknow, ‘Sheroes Hangout' has two branches that accommodate and employ 30 survivors to help them lead their lives to the fullest.

While doing my IGCSE Art project, I had the opportunity to interact with the acid attack survivors from the Sheroes Agra Hangout. I spoke with Geeta Ji, and her daughter who opened up to me about their painful story. Having acid thrown on her and her young daughters by her husband truly changed her life, and while their stories were heartbreaking, their strength and courage was even more inspirational.

I have been determined to provide support to them in my own little way, using my art to create paintings and graphics to help these brave women.

Medium: Acrylic Paints

This is a painting of Geeta, an acid attack survivor.

During the pandemic, I had the opportunity of meeting Geeta ji and her daughter Neetu virtually and she was kind enough to open up about her story.

Geeta ji was attacked with acid by her husband in 2011. One night when he was intoxicated, he came home around 1am and threw acid on Geeta ji and her daughters. The attack led to Geeta’s face being burnt almost completely, and blinded their daughter Neetu. The biggest victim of this acid attack was their baby girl, Krishna, who died as a result of this gruesome attack. The reason, according to the husband, was that Geeta bore him daughters and was unable to give him a male child.

Her husband was put behind bars, while Geeta and Neetu recovered in the hospital for a year and a half.

Medium: Linoleum
Technique: Lino Printing
Inspiration: Acid Attack Survivors

A series of prints taken using a new technique, linocut. I carved out my design on a linoleum sheet and used an oil based ink to take prints on different coloured papers.

This is inspired by survivors of acid attack.

I used different strokes to show the depth of their skin and to highlight the damage brutal acid attacks cause on a much deeper level.
